What results can I expect?

Individual results will vary depending on your habits and your unique dental makeup, but most individuals experience at least 2-3 shades whiter teeth. It is safe to say that the initial results will last the average person up to one year. Those who smoke cigarettes or frequently drink dark, acidic liquids like; coffee, tea, red wine, colas, etc., will have to touch up their teeth more often that people who do not.

What causes tooth discoloration?

There are many reasons for discoloured teeth. Aging and the on-going consumption of coffee, tea, cola, red wine, tobacco products, curries etc., can lead to staining of the teeth. The ingestion of tetracycline and excessive fluoride frequently causes such severe staining that extended treatment lengths and perhaps more aggressive means may be required. Traumatized and non-vital teeth that are discoloured can also be whitened, but usually require a more invasive procedure performed by the dentist.

Will my fillings and crowns be affected by the whitening?

While hydrogen or carbamide peroxide will have no negative effect on the integrity of fillings and crowns, the simple fact is that these materials will not whiten in any type of bleaching procedure. Some surface staining may be lifted from crowns or veneers, but the underlying colour of these materials will not change.

Is teeth whitening for everyone?

Pregnant and nursing mothers, and children under the age of 14 should consult their physician prior to undergoing any whitening procedure. Those with severely tetracycline stained teeth may opt for a more aggressive cosmetic procedure like bonding and veneers. With the teeth whitening sessions, you have the option of getting a remineralizing kit afterwards. What the remineralizing does, post treatment, is closes up the pores right away so staining does not easily happen. Without this remineralizing treatment, your teeth are more easily prone to staining as it will take up to 5 days to close up the pores.
